I thought long and hard and did lots of research before I had Gastric band surgery on 10 March 2009 with WLS Group. After 20 years of YO-YO dieting and repeating the cycle every year of losing weight and putting it back on I decided on Gastric Band to ensure that once I lost the weight the band would assist me in keeping it off. I knew I was not doing my body any good by starving myself on 500 cals a day diet and worried about putting the weight back on as such extreme diets are unsustainable long term.
The decision to use WLS group was the right one as everything has been great from the initial meeting with Wendy through to nutritional aftercare from Colleen. I had my procedure done in Preston which was superb and have my monthly review and band fill adjustments with Wendy in Leeds. 4 months post op I had 4ml in a 10 ml band and have lost 5 stone since 1 Jan 2009.
Make no mistake this is not an easy option and I have to think and plan every day what I am going to eat to ensure I get the right levels of protein on board.
Typical days diet
Breakfast – Porridge or scrambled eggs
Lunch - sushi or fish or jacket potato with cheese
Tea – Fresh fish and veg or omelette
Snacks – Fruit, cottage cheese, babybell cheese, yoguart
The band assists me in keeping the weight off, I do lots of exercise more than I have ever done in my life
Typical weeks exercise
Mon – Spin class
Tue - Spin class
Wed – Road bike - Cycle approx 30 miles
Thu – Swim – 30 mins
Fri – Rest day
Sat – Weights at gym
Sun – Road bike – Cycle approx 60 miles
I use energy powder SIS mixed with water whilst exercising to keep me hydrated and take enegy gels with me on cycle rides.
This has been the best thing I have ever done and I only wish I had done it years ago. Make no mistake its not an easy option and I work on the basis of 70/30 I put in 70% and the band helps me 30%. Having paid £6000 of my own money for the procedure I am not going to cheat and work against the band by eating the wrong things. I have never felt better in the last 20 years than I do now I am not carrying all that unnecessary weight round and I don’t look too bad either.
It might not be the right option for everyone but it certainly was for me.
