Profile

Mr Ackroyd is a Consultant General Surgeon at Thornbury Hospital who specialises in surgical procedures for obesity. Having qualified in medicine from Sheffield University in 1989, he then trained in surgery both in the UK and abroad and is now a fully qualified and accredited general surgeon, with a special interest in upper gastrointestinal surgery.

Mr Ackroyd's major clinical interests include surgery for obesity, oesophagogastric cancer, reflux disease, gallstones and hernias. His research interests include ablation therapy for Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer, clinical trials comparing different types of anti-reflux surgery and the metabolic effects of obesity surgery.

Mr Ackroyd trained in obesity surgery in Sheffield and Adelaide together with visits to various European centres, including Brussels, Lyon and Gothenburg to learn new techniques.

He is a member of the British Obesity Surgery Society (BOSS) and is currently an elected committee member and the Treasurer of this organisation.

Mr Ackroyd's surgical practice offers a full range of obesity procedures, including laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic vertical banded gastroplasty, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

He also offers intragastric balloon insertion in some appropriate cases.
